In 1924 the Politeness Police was formed as advocates of “…thoughtfulness and respect among the students for the citizens of Northampton.” Displaying an official-looking police badge, they were on the look-out for miscreants who 1) trespassed on the grass; 2) ate pastries or candy on Main Street; 3) saved seats at the movies; and 4) walked more than 2 abreast on city streets. This group later focuses on campus infractions and became known as the Grass Cops. This image shows a Grass Cop in action in the early 1930s.
